Equipment

  • slow cooker or crockpot
  • vegetable peeler
  • cutting board
  • chef's knife
  • immersion blender or standard blender for pureeing
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • Airtight Containers for storing or freezing

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds ripe pears, peeled, cored, and chopped (Bartlett or Bosc preferred)
  • 1/2 cup water or apple juice
  • 2-3 sticks cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar or pure maple syrup (optional, to taste)
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg or cardamom (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  • Peel, core, and chop the pears into 1–2 inch chunks. Add them to the slow cooker along with water (or apple juice), cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and sweetener if using.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 4–6 hours or HIGH for 2–3 hours, until pears are soft and easily mashed with a fork.
  • Remove cinnamon sticks. Stir in vanilla extract and lemon juice. For a chunky texture, mash with a fork. For a smoother sauce, puree with an immersion blender directly in the crockpot.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as desired. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.

Notes

Storage: Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or freeze for up to 8 months. Leave 1 inch of headspace for expansion.
Serving Ideas: Delicious as a side dish, baby food, topping for pancakes or oatmeal, or alongside roasted pork.
Tips: For thicker sauce, remove lid during last hour to allow moisture to evaporate. For thinner sauce, stir in extra water or apple juice. Add grated ginger for a spiced variation.
